5 Steps to Healthier Sleep

share

If you’re like most people, maintaining a healthy, fulfilling sleep regimen is easier said than done. The allure of late night television, that midnight snack that calls your name from the kitchen, those hilarious cat videos on YouTube – there are more than enough distractions out there to keep you from getting the kind of sleep your body needs to stay healthy and function properly. Luckily, there are steps you can take to help promote healthier sleeping habits that will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to conquer your day.

1.Pick a bedtime and stick with it – even on the weekends.

Consistency is key when developing habits of any kind, and that includes sleeping. Being consistent with your sleeping schedule will reinforce your body’s sleep cycle and will help you have healthier, more fulfilling sleep at night.

2.Exercise daily

Exercising daily can help reduce stress levels and can serve as a way to help tire your body from inactivity throughout the day. Vigorous exercise is best, but even light activity is better than none. You can exercise at any time of the day, just be sure not to let it disrupt your sleep schedule.

3.Avoid napping

While we’re all a fan of power napping, eliminating these naps in the middle of your day can help lead to more restful sleep throughout the night.

4.Create a routine

Developing a routine that is performed nightly will help to remind your body that it’s time to wind down. This could include a warm bath or shower, reading a book, some meditation time, or listening to soothing music. Be sure to avoid bright lights and other things that may make your mind anxious or cause excitement.

5.Get a comfortable mattress and pillow

This almost goes without saying, but a comfortable mattress and pillow are the bread and butter of a good night’s sleep. Most good bedding is subjective, so choose what feels best for you.  Be sure to regularly flip and rotate your mattress, and replace your pillow every six months to avoid worn, unsupported sleep.

By following these five simple steps, you’ll be on your way to healthier, more fulfilling sleep in no time. For more information, contact the sleep clinic at Baptist Health.
